About This Site
Top Chow Chow Dog Care publishes first-person reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on keeping a Chow Chow comfortable at home: undercoat rakes, slicker brushes, high velocity dryers, cooling mats and joint support chews. Everything here comes from an owner's daily routine, not a clinic or a grooming salon.

Dog Safety
Nothing on this site is veterinary advice. The author is a dog owner, not a veterinarian or a professional groomer. Talk to your own vet before starting any supplement, and call your vet about limping, trouble rising, skin sores, hot spots, squinting or eye discharge, or any sudden change in your dog.
Chow Chows overheat easily. Heavy panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting or collapse can mean heatstroke, which is an emergency: move the dog to shade and call a vet right away. A cooling mat does not replace shade, fresh water and skipping walks in the heat of the day. Never leave a dog in a parked car, and do not shave a double coat to cool it down.
Grooming tools can injure skin. Use light pressure, never rake or brush over sores or irritated skin, and stop if your dog shows pain. Cut out nothing near the skin yourself; let a groomer or vet handle tight mats. High velocity dryers are loud and can burn or frighten a dog: use low heat, keep the nozzle moving, keep it away from the eyes and ears, and never leave a running dryer unattended. Keep supplements out of a dog's reach, since a whole container of tasty chews is a real overdose risk, and check the label for shellfish or other ingredients your dog cannot have.
